According to the Bible Dictionary in the King James Version: "miracles are called signs, as being visible tokens of an invisible power; they are powers or mighty works, because they are the acts of One who is almighty; they are simply works, or the natural results of the Messiah's presence among men; they are wonders, marvels, because of the effect produced on those who saw them." According to the Easton's Bible Dictionary: a miracle is "an event in the external world brought about by the immediate agency or the simple volition of God, operating without the use of means capable of being discerned by the senses, and designed to authenticate the divine commission of a religious teacher and the truth of his message. It is an occurrence at once above nature and above man. It shows the intervention of a power that is not limited by the laws either of matter or of mind, a power interrupting the fixed laws which govern their movements, a supernatural power." Also according to Katherine Anne Porter a miracle is "an event that appears inexplicable by the laws of nature and so is held to be supernatural in origin or an act of God: Miracles are spontaneous, they cannot be summoned, but come of themselves."
